Knowledge and attitudes of nurses in sexual activity and educate it to patients with myocardial infarction and their spouses

| Aims: Sexual subjects are an important part of human health. Sexual conseling need of myocardial infarction (MI) patients are frequently overlooked more and more by nurses. This study was to analyze the knowledge of nurses about sexual activities and also their attitude about its educating to MI patients and their spouses. Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, 300 nurses of heart wards from hospitals of Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2006 were selected by census sampling method and studied. Needed information was collected by two questionnaires to evaluate attitudes and knowledge of nurses. Data was analyzed by SPSS 11.5 statistical software with independent T-test and ANOVA. Results: The mean total score of knowledge of nurses was 11.26±6.4 and the mean total attitude score was 68±10.9. Studied nurses were acquired 54% of the total score of knowledge and 76% of the total score of attitude. Correlation between the total score of knowledge and attitude showed a significant positive relationship (p=0.0001 r=0.66) . Conclusion: Due to inadequate knowledge and positive attitude of nurses in this field, knowledge of them can be promoted by planning courses in order to help patients. |
