abstract ={Aims: As the ultimate goal of professional nursing is to provide high quality care for patients in all fields (biological, psychological and social), nursing educators should use teaching methods that prevents superficial learning of students and improve meaningful and high level learning in them. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of lecture- and concept mapping based learning on cognitive learning levels of nursing students. Methods: In a quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-test method, 66 fifth semester nursing students in “Cardiovascular” course were selected by census method and randomly divided into two control and case groups. After performing pre-test, control and case groups received education using lecture and concept mapping, respectively, for 8 sessions during 2 months. Then, the post-test was taken and 4 weeks after, remind test was performed. For gathering data, a research-made educational improvement test consisted of two parts was used. Data was analyzed by repeated measurement ANOVA method and SPSS 15 software. Results: The procedure of total scores change (knowledge and learning level) was statistically significant in each of two methods (p<; 0.01). The procedure of knowledge scores change was not significant between two groups. But the procedure of scores change in meaningful learning level in case group was statistically significant (p<; 0.005). Conclusion: Concept mapping method is more effective to access meaningful learning and high levels of understanding than lecture method.},

abstract ={Aims: Medical emergency students are subjected to the risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne viruses following needle stick/sharp object injuries (NSIs/Sis) and blood / body fluids exposures . The goal of this study was to determine the frequency and the features of contaminated NSIs/Sis and blood/body fluids exposures among emergency medical technicians students. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Arak University of Medical Sciences in 2009. 52 medical emergency students were participated in the study. Data collection tool was a bipartite researcher-made questionnaire. The first part was related to individual characteristics and demography and the second part was related to the frequency and causes of needle stick/sharp object injuries contaminated with blood and blood / body fluids exposures and the performance of students during injury incidence. Results: 32.7% and 13.46% of the subjects had experienced at least one contaminated NSI and blood / body fluids exposures in the last term, respectively. Only 41/17 % and 16/66 % of the students who had experienced NSIs and blood / body fluids reported all exposures, respectively. The most common procedure leading to these injuries was catheter insertion. The first measure taken by the most students following the injury was washing the injury location. Conclusion: The amount of NSIs and blood/body fluids exposure is high among medical emergency students and also the performance of some of them after incidence is not appropriate. More education programs should be planned and performed for medical emergency students in order to increase their awareness about prevention from these injuries and their resulting hazards and the subsequent actions and measures.},

This study was conducted to determine the effect of chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% oral rinse in preventing from pneumonia associated with delayed artificial ventilation and its interactive effect with disease severity. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 80 patients newly admitted in the general intensive care unit (ICU) of Loqman-e-Hakim hospital were selected randomly and assigned in two groups. Patients of experimental and control groups received daily twice chlorhexidine oral rinse and normal saline oral rinse, respectively. Ventilator associated pneumonia was diagnosed by Modified Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (MCPIS). Results: The overall incidence of late VAP was 16.25% (5 VS 25% in experimental and control groups, respectively). Fisher’s exact test showed a significant differences between two groups (p<; 0.05). Average score of illness severity in chlorhexidine group was 26.41 while in normal saline group was 23.95 that implied a significant statistical difference (p<; 0.001). Patients with higher severity of illness didn’t develop VAP in chlorhexidine group. Conclusion: Selective decontamination or cleaning of digestive tract with chlorhexidine oral rinse twice a day does not differ from normal saline in prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia, but can reduce the late onset of ventilator associated pneumonia and is effective in patients with more severe condition.},

abstract ={Introduction: Lack of pain relief in patients, particularly in patients undergoing artery transplant surgery, cause higher mortality and complications. This study aimed to identify the opinions of the nurses about barriers of using of pain relief methods. Methods: In this descriptive study was done with 211 samples by census method in Kerman hospitals in 2008. For collecting the data, a researcher made questionnaire was used which had two parts (the first part was about demographic characteristics and the second part included 31 questions about barriers in four domains: patient, nurse, institution and physician). Analyzing the data was done by non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis). Results: In nurses’ view, most barriers mentioned in patient’s area were not considered as barrier. Among the barriers to nurses, the most effective barrier was nurse inadequate knowledge about methods of nonpharmacologic pain relief (91.7 percent). The most effective barrier in the organizational area was hard prevent regulations in the use of opium drugs (52.2 percent) and in the physician’s area, lack of physician willingness to use of pain relief methods were charged the highest barrier (65.9 percent). Conclusion: Identifying pain relief barriers would help in overcoming these barriers and besides revising the difficult regulations on the use of narcotic drugs, seems necessary. abstract ={Introduction : Hospital triage is part of the emergency department structure which is done by emergency nurses. There is a little information about knowledge level of the nurses about triage. This study aimed to determine knowledge level of the nurses about hospital triage. Methods : This was the descriptive survey using simple random sampling. The researcher made questionnaire included 25 questions in three parts of demographic data, pure triage knowledge (15 questions) and triage decision making (10 questions). Seventy nurses of the emergency department participated in the study from all the hospitals of Sistan-Baluchestan province in 2009. The reliability of the questionnaire obtained 0.60 using test-retest. The data were analyzed using Kappa statistics, independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients through software SPSS15. Results : The response rate was equal to 68% (70 out of 102). The nurses had not enough knowledge about the hospital triage 39.94% of the responses to the knowledge level questions were correct. Only in 3 hospitals (out of 10), special nurses have been dedicated to triage. The nurses who had more than two years experience in emergency department had received a higher average score. The concordance rate of the nurses in triage decision making was average ( κ = 0.56). Conclusion : Low knowledge of the nurses about hospital triage could be due to lack of formal training courses and lack of obligation of the emergency departments on evidence-based decision making. Establishing academic courses for triage nursing and developing national triage scale is recommended.},
